"One of the best books Baldwin has ever written–perhaps the best of all." –The Philadelphia Inquirer“A moving, painful story, so vividly human and so obviously based on reality that it strikes us as timeless.”–Joyce Carol Oates"If Van Gogh was our nineteenth-century artist-saint, James Baldwin is our twentiethth-century one." –Michael Ondaatje"Striking and particularly haunting. . . . A beauty, especially in its rendering of youthful passion." –Cosmopolitan"A major work of black American fiction...  His best novel yet, even Baldwin's most devoted readers are due to be stunned by it."–The New Republic"Emotional dynamite...  a powerful assault upon the cynicism that seems today to drain our determination to confront deep social problems."–Library Journal"A moving, painful story, so vividly human and so obviously based on reality that it strikes us as timeless."–The New York Times Book ReviewJames Baldwin was born in 1924 and educated in New York. He is the author of more than twenty works of fiction and nonfiction, including Go Tell It on the Mountain; Notes of a Native Son; Giovanni’s Room; Nobody Knows My Name; Another Country; The Fire Next Time; Nothing Personal; Blues for Mister Charlie; Going to Meet the Man; The Amen Corner; Tell Me How Long the Train’s Been Gone; One Day When I Was Lost; If Beale Street Could Talk; The Devil Finds Work; Little Man, Little Man; Just Above My Head; The Evidence of Things Not Seen; Jimmy’s Blues; and The Price of the Ticket. Among the awards he has received are a Eugene F. Saxon Memorial Trust Award, a Rosenwald Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Partisan Review Fellowship, and a Ford Foundation grant. He was made a Commander of the Legion of Honor in 1986. He died in 1987.

In this honest and stunning novel, now a major motion picture directed by Barry Jenkins, James Baldwin has given America a moving story of love in the face of injustice.

Told through the eyes of Tish, a nineteen-year-old girl, in love with Fonny, a young sculptor who is the father of her child, Baldwin’s story mixes the sweet and the sad. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions–affection, despair, and hope. In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche.

Fantastic, Quick Read James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk is a beautiful and heart-wrenching look at 1970s Harlem. Baldwin seamlessly weaves multiple topical issues like racism, police brutality, prison injustice, young love, financial struggle, class disparity, and many more between the pages of this book. I read this primarily as a precursor to seeing the 2018 movie, but I will never forget this tangible and devastating reading experience. I have not read something this strong in a long time. I would encourage anyone to read in one sitting if they have a long day ahead of them. Be prepared to cry multiple times throughout.Beautifully written,! Just as I expected, literature at its finest. I'd never read a James Baldwin book before but I knew I'd be in for a well written and articulate reading. I'll not describe the story as any Baldwin book is a classic and stands on its own. However, I did wish for a more fulfilling conclusion. Who am I to question the mind of the great Baldwin though.Read it because it's a classic. This is a classic novel that I should've read a long time ago but never did. I'm reading (actually, listening) to it now because the movie adaptation is about to be released. This is a love story complete with the stereotypes of the time. A black man in jail because of a corrupt justice system. A young woman pregnant with the child of the incarcerated. Black families struggling with their morality and with each other. It's been awhile since I heard phrases like "that cat" and "my pad" so it took a minute for my ear to get adjusted to the time travel. Anyway, I'm glad I read it and would recommend that you add this to your reading list, if nothing else than the fact it is a classic novel.

An Indie Next and Library Reads Pick!Praise for The Au Pair:“This will keep you turning those pages. The characters are still playing on my mind.”—Jane Corry, USA Today bestselling author of My Husband's Wife“Entrancing and compelling, The Au Pair seamlessly alternates between two riveting narrators. Atmospheric and reminiscent of Daphne du Maurier's work, it's a beautiful read that delivers a shocking and satisfying ending.”—Liv Constantine, USA Today & Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Last Mrs. Parrish“This is one hell of a ride”—New York Post“As delicious and spellbinding as a soap opera, complete with the dramatic moments and outrageous twists. A promising first novel from Rous, The Au Pair is an absolutely absorbing and scandalous page-turner.”—Booklist “A splendid read that will be best enjoyed with a book club or a buddy, as you’ll be itching to digest the tale’s twists with someone else, especially when you reach the jaw-dropping climax.”—BookPage“With a transporting sense of place and gripping story line, The Au Pair delves into the darkest of family secrets. A great read.”—Eve Chase Emma Rous is a Cambridge University graduate who spent eighteen years working as a veterinary surgeon. She is now writing full-time, and lives with her husband and three school-age sons.

If V. C. Andrews and Kate Morton had a literary love child, Emma Rous' The Au Pair would be it.

One of the most anticipated books of 2019 from Pop Sugar, Bustle, Cosmo, Parade, and Goodreads!

Seraphine Mayes and her twin brother, Danny, were born in the middle of summer at their family's estate on the Norfolk coast. Within hours of their birth, their mother threw herself from the cliffs, the au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark cloaks, changelings, and the aloof couple who drew a young nanny into their inner circle.

Now an adult, Seraphine mourns the recent death of her father. While going through his belongings, she uncovers a family photograph that raises dangerous questions. It was taken on the day the twins were born, and in the photo, their mother, surrounded by her husband and her young son, is smiling serenely and holding just one baby.

Who is the child, and what really happened that day?

Absurd ending! Seraphine Mayes recently lost her father in a tragic accident. When cleaning out his belongings from their home, Summerbourne, she finds a long lost picture she had never seen before. In it is her mother, Ruth, and her father, Domenic, holding a new born baby. It was taken the day she was born but where is her twin brother Danny? Why wouldn't all four of them be in the picture? And why did her mother throw herself off the cliffs into the sea below only hours after their birth?Seraphine questions her older brother Edwin about the picture. He can't tell her much except that the picture was taken by his au pair, Laura, who never returned after their mothers suicide. Seraphine makes it her mission to track down Laura in hopes that she'll provide her the answers she's looking for.The chapters alternate between Seraphine in the present and Laura in the past when she moves into Summerbourne as their new au pair.I could not stand Seraphine. I found her completely annoying. I thought her behavior more often than not was atrocious and I found it very hard to garner any sympathy for her plight. This woman went from 0 to 60 in 1 second after finding that picture. She went from a grieving daughter to - Who am I? Who are my "REAL" parents? From here she accuses pretty much every one around her of lying to her. My urge to smack this woman grew with every turn of the page.I found Laura's chapters much more interesting which gave me the resolve to finish this book. While it may of been interesting it quickly morphed into the ridiculous towards the end.And what's up with that ending? The "who" and the reasoning for it (not to mention you never really do know anything for sure because the "who" never does admit to anything)~ Not impressed!I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. Thanks, Goodreads! 2.5 stars!Characters got on my nerves, things were unrealistic. (no spoilers) I didn't SUPER hate the book but I didn't love it either. It's hard to explain what I mean when I say that I didn't love the fact that Laura's revelations were pretty unrealistic without spoiling anything, but if you've read this book you may understand what I mean. Just the way things "happened", if you will, didn't really seem realistic. Laura really got on my nerves by the end of the book. She pretty much ruined so many things for many people. Understanding to a point but I just saw her as being super selfish of a character. Although her chapters were far more engaging than Seraphine's. Also the family dynamic gets so confusing by the end; numerous times as I was reading I had to remind myself who was related to who, etc. It's just a weird situation. Definitely not a suspenseful readThe Best Book The Au Pair gets 5 stars from me. This was one of the best books I've ever read. I've ready plenty of books that have gotten 5 stars from me. If 10 stars was the max, then 10 stars I would give it. This story has everything you want in a book. All the characters fit so well together.Thank you Emma Rous for such a fantastic story. One I'll remember forever.

I like my GPS, but I love my paper Atlas! I'm old school i guess. I do use a GPS but it foes not show much but where you are at the time. I love the Atlas as you can see far head, cities, town, lakes, parks etc. that might make you change your course. The size is perfect ANF easy to reaf!My husband is a map guy and this was an ... My husband is a map guy and this was an updated version of one he's used for over a decade.Trust this map instead of your GPS. Had this map for a cross country adventure. It is accurate and I found it to be better than relying on the GPS in my car. Not hard to read and attractions are well marked. Good durability too, we put it through the ringer and no pages tore and no color bleed when drinks spill on it or it gets a little wet. The fact that it is not spiral bound is also a bonus because it can bend and fold in ways you wouldn't want to do on a spiral bound map. For more populous areas, they also split then into different sections which gives you better detail of the lay of the land. Knowing how to read a map should be a standard, but if you don't know then this map is intuitive enough that the learning curve is minimal. I recommend this map.
